October 2016 Newsletter From Mrs. LeRoy
Hello all!
I can’t believe that October is here! We are steaming along like The Engine Who Could. Later this month we will have to be careful with Halloween, as there will be no nuts in “Trick-or–Treat” this year due to allergies in the classroom. A parent versed in cooking in a nut free kitchen has offered to send in a snack. If you have a great idea for a classroom game or fall activity, please send it in with your child for Halloween. I would like to have each child share one or two “Spooky Jokes” that day, so keep your ears open for a reminder about this the week of Halloween.
We may be walking to the local Mattapoisett Historical Society this month to learn about the history of the Town of Mattapoisett, and locate artifacts unique to the town with the new curator. This is an excellent source for authentic artifacts and information. If you want to walk with us, send me a note, and make sure you have a current CORI form filed with the school secretary. Following the visit, we will be writing about all we learned about Mattapoisett/Massachusetts using the new RAN method of teaching Non-fiction Writing. http://www.myteacherpages.com/webpages/mkiva/ran.cfm
In reading, we will finishing Unit I, and then be exploring stories in the theme of Unit 2, "Which skills help us make our way in the world?’" such as “Kumak's Fish” and “Supermarket.” You can go to https://sites.google.com/a/pennridge.us/mrs-portuguez/home/reading-street/unit-1 which is a free https://sites.google.com/a/pennridge.us/mrs-portuguez/home/reading-street/unit-1website for extra practice in reading.
Science will focus on magnets and “Adaptations” as we read the story, “Penguin Chick.”
In Mathematics, we will be finishing with Chapter 1 of GoMath, Learning to Estimate and Solving Addition and Subtraction Problems through 1,000. In Chapter 2 we will focus on Interpreting Data Using Graphs such as line graphs, pictographs, bar graphs and line plots. I have already sent home the Parent Letter that accompanies Chapter 1 and Chapter 2.
In Spelling, if you would like extra practice there is a website that builds phonemic skills at http://www.smarttutor.com/free-resources/free-reading-lessons/third-grade-reading/ or http://gradespelling.com/free-page-all-list/?gILI=2147473728 .You will know which story we are working on by looking at the Family Times that goes home on Mondays with your child. The Family Times lists the spelling words, the vocabulary words, and the skills we are working on for that week. There are also suggested activities to work with your child.
Don’t forget to sign up with the PTA! To download a form, go to www.mattapoisettpta.org
Please send me your email if you have not already sent it in. If you would like to donate to the class, currently we could use tissues, and wipes. Thank you!
Important Dates:
October 10.............Columbus Day, No School
October 27th and 28th.....Early Release Days, Parent-Teacher Conferences Reminders on Oct. 12th.
