Dear Parents,
I’d like to introduce myself to you as we begin a new year in third grade for the 2016–2017 school year. I am honored to have your son/daughter as a student in my classroom this year and I am looking forward to getting to know each child.
I have been in education for 34 years and have taught pre-school aged students through adolescents. My bachelor and master’s degrees are in Special Education, however, I hold both Elementary and Special Education teaching certificates. I am also certified as a “Classroom Yoga” teacher, and “Responsive Classroom” teacher, and Mentor Teacher. For twenty years, I worked as a Special Education Teacher at Center School with students in kindergarten through third grade, with an additional six years in regular education teaching second grade. This is my 6th, wonderful year in grade three. I am a single parent and mother of two young men who are in college. Attached is a tentative schedule of the specials. My website is currently under construction, and I will be updating it this fall. Please feel free to contact me by writing a note, emailing me, or calling me if you need to communicate. Be sure to include your son/daughter’s name, and the date when writing a note, as this is the best way to ensure that I will see it and respond in a timely manner.
Homework is a necessary part of each grade. I feel strongly that homework should not take any more than thirty to forty minutes per night to complete. Please find a special place in the home that you can designate as the "homework area," and equip it with the necessary supplies your child will need. Spelling homework will consist of studying the weekly spelling words and completing activities using these words. Math homework will be given approximately twice a week, and will consist of reinforcement of work already introduced in the classroom. If something unexpected comes up, and you are not able to complete a homework assignment because of an emergency, please write me a note and finish the work when you are able. If you find that the homework is taking more time than forty minutes, please stop and initial the paper where you left off. Please do not do the homework for your child. Additionally, I would recommend children read at their independent level for 20 minutes every night and practice math facts for easy recall. I assign book reports throughout the year. Occasionally, we will have a special project. More detailed instructions will accompany these projects.
We are a tree nut free classroom. Please do not send your child with snacks that have any nuts. For safety concerns, it is important that you read the nurses note on this matter for further information.
I’m looking forward to seeing you at open house on September 15th!
